Agreement Signed to Promote Cruise Ship Movement in Samaná

The Bahía Cruise Services and the Association of Vendors of Key Levantado signed an agreement with the Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) in which they commit to develop a series of actions to promote the development of cruise ship activity in Samaná.

Federico Schad, President of Bahia Cruise Services and Alexi Mejía Rodríguez, President of the Association of Vendors of Key Levantado signed the agreement through which they also commit to the relocation of vendors from the beach to a neutral place where they will build some 15 stands for vendors to sell handicrafts, energy facilities and drinking water.

The accord was signed in the presence of Technical and Tourism deputy ministers from the Samaná region, Radhamés Martínez Aponte and Elsa de León as well as Yarin Casquero, Director of the Department de Business & Services.

The vendors agreed and committed to selling local, recognized brands and articles that are ecologically helpful to the region. Part of this decision involves an immediate prohibition on the sale of shells, starfish and straw hats made from palm as a way of avoiding unnecessary damage to the ecosystem.

In addition, they discussed installing grease extractors and removal systems in the kitchens, hot water equipment, hand-washing dispensers, soap, paper and towels, fire extinguishers and efficient garbage collection, among other things.

The vendors made a commitment to carry updated ID cards issued by the Tourism Ministry and to take training courses in food handling, putting price tags – in pesos and in dollars – on objects so as to be easily visible to the public and to communicate to SECTUR any changes in the location of vendors’ stands before the change occurs.
