In a telephone conversation on Thursday night, Fernández and Obama agreed that the Dominican Republic is the best bridge for US aid to get into Haiti, according to the President’s Office of Information, Press and Publicity. President Obama expressed a great deal of concern for the situation facing the Haitian people and told President Fernández that the government of the United States intends to make effective contributions towards Haiti’s recovery. In addition, Spain’s Vice President, Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega, called President Fernández to confirm Spain’s willingness to participate in the medium and long-term recovery efforts for Haiti. The Spanish Vice President assured President Fernández that the European Union, of which Spain currently holds the presidency, is also intending to participate in the recovery efforts to help return Haiti to normal. Ms. Fernández de la Vega will travel to the Dominican Republic this Tuesday to meet with President Fernandez and Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive.
