Operations Center Moved to Jacmel to Receive and Distribute Humanitarian Aid


The Center of Operations, coordinated by the Chief of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Rafael Peña Antonio, through the Navy, ordered the transfer of the command center for the reception and distribution of humanitarian aid to be moved to Jacmel, Haiti in order to facilitate rapid assistance to those affected by the earthquake that devastated this nation’s capital Port-au-Prince.


In the early hours of Monday, the Coast Guard arrived to this community with 35 tons of provisions in an operation that was jointly coordinated with the provincial governor of Pedernales, Francisco Alberto Jiménez.


Six naval units will operate from the Red Key Port to Jacmel with a displacement capacity of more than 300 tons of provisions. The ships to be used include the patrol boats Medianos Tortuguero PM-203 and the Capotillo PM-204, in addition to the Coast Guards’ Bellatrix, Canopus and Orion CC-103, GC-107 and GC-109, respectively. They will also be using various high-speed boats.

Meanwhile, the military sent a flotilla of light and heavy vehicles overland, including an ambulance with equipment and medicine to facilitate access to medical attention for those affected by the earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12th, according to the President’s Information, Press and Publicity Office.


In Barahona, military coordination is underway for Naval Units to set sail with humanitarian aid from the port in this province to Jacmel then Jimani, where the Reception Center is located.


Rear Admiral, Aquilino María Melo, was named supervisor of these naval operations underway from Barahona to Pedernales with a base in Red Key. Aquilino María Melo, Commanding Officer of the Southern Command, will remain in charge of these maneuvers for the duration of the humanitarian relief operation.


Naval Captain, Frank R. Polanco de los Santos, Chief of the Northern Naval Command, will supervise the operations from Puerto Plata to the province of Montecristi.
