Virtual Educa Santo Domingo 2010

(Santo Domingo, April 15, 2010) – On Thursday April 15, the upcoming  Virtual Educa Santo Domingo 2010 was introduced at the auditorium of Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE). The event will take place in June in the Dominican capital which will make it the center of attention in the area of education, training and new technologies.

Yamile Eusebio, general coordinator of the event in the DR, gave the welcoming speech. She said FUNGLODE is honored to be hosting this meeting of important international relevance, now celebrating its tenth anniversary.

Following Ms. Eusebio, the Rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), Franklin García Fermín, spoke about his experience in Zaragoza and Buenos Aires, cities that hosted Virtual Educa the previous two years. He underscored the responsibility of being the host country of this important event and added that the university is fully committed to its success.

The official presentation of Virtual Educa, which will be attended by some 3,000 people from around the world, was organized and overseen by José María Antón, Secretary General of this annual international conference which is part of a series of program initiatives that came out of the Latin American Leaders Summits.   

Mr. Antón referred to the history of this event which arose from the need for a place to speak Spanish at international education meetings. He pointed to “the extraordinary vision of President Leonel Fernández in the area of promotion of education,” from which came the slogan for this year’s conference: “A New Education for a New Era.”

As part of Virtual Educa, Education Minister, Melenio Paredes, announced the introduction of successful projects developed in the DR that are having a notable impact, including encouraging people to get actively involved in these issues.   

Ligia Amada Melo, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology also spoke at the FUNGLODE event. She reiterated the importance of hosting Virtual Educa and stressed President Leonel Fernández’s constant support of this initiative. President Fernández presides over the patronage of the Virtual Educa program on an international level. 

Ms. Amada Melo added that this event provides an opportunity to become familiar with the successful experiences on an international level in the area of TICs which she believes should be replicated. She called on people to help turn the Dominican Republic into a landmark with the celebration of this event. “We hope people will be talking about Virtual Educa Santo Domingo before and after it takes place.”

Virtual Educa Santo Domingo 2010 will take place from June 21-25 at the UASD and FUNGLODE headquarters. Issues linked to education, training and new technology will be the main topics discussed and debated. 

The activity held to introduce the upcoming Virtual Educa ended with a promotional video about the event to be held in the First Capital of America, Santo Domingo.
