President of the IDB Highlights Dominican Republic’s Economic Growth Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) President Luis Alberto Moreno said that the economy of the Dominican Republic has been able to overcome obstacles and difficulties thanks to prevention measures adopted by the government. Moreno said the government was successful in its social policy programs such as the System of Beneficiaries (SIUBEN) which has given assistance to thousands of Dominican families. He said that, in his judgment, President Leonel Fernández avoided the pitfalls of the global economic crisis and achieved impressive growth of the Dominican economy. The IDB executive suggested that Fernández had successfully prepared himself to face the international financial difficulties of the past months, reported the President’s Office of Information, Press and Publicity. Moreno said the government was successful in its social policy programs such as the System of Beneficiaries (SIUBEN) which has given assistance to thousands of Dominican families. He pointed out that President Fernández confronted all these financial difficulties as a result of his unwavering vision of the future, applying measures that will have long-lasting benefit. On another topic, the president of the IDB highlighted Fernández’ leadership in the reconstruction of Haiti and recognized that he was the first head of state to go the aid of the Haitians after the devastating earthquake on January 12th. He added that the Dominican leader had launched a permanent effort in support of international assistance for Haiti and recalled the recent Summit on the Future of Haiti, which took place in the Dominican town of Punta Cana. Moreno stressed that President Fernández had extended and strengthened his leadership role, becoming a regional leader. As a result, the IDB president said he felt honored in the presence of the Dominican leader and his retinue on their official visit to Washington. 100 MILLION DOLLARS FOR NATURAL DISASTERS In another order of business, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved the transfer of 100 million dollars to the Dominican Republic to be used by the government in the event of a large scale natural disaster to provide help to citizens. This measure is part of a pilot plan that will be carried out by the IDB in Central American and Caribbean countries to provide assistance to the people of these countries who may be affected by a natural disaster. The object is that affected individuals will not have to wait for the traditional delivery of disaster aid and assistance. | ||
