Dominican Athletes Ready for Mayagüez Games Dominican Vice President Rafael Alburquerque met with the delegation of Dominican athletes who will attend the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. The sporting event, to take place between July 17 and August 1, will be attended by 494 Dominican athletes, the largest national delegation to attend a sporting event to date, said Felipe “Jay” Payano, Minister of Sports. “To say that I support sports in the country is to say that I support the young people of the Dominican Republic.” At the ceremony, held in the Ambassadors Hall of the National Palace, Vice President Alburquerque gave the Dominican flag to the representative of the athletes as Payano and Luisín Mejía, president of the Dominican Olympic Committee, looked on. Alburquerque, having handed the national flag to volley ball player Brenda Castillo, said he was convinced of the important role the Dominican athletes are playing in this sporting event.
