President Calls for Joint Efforts to Solve Drug Trafficking Problem Dominican President Leonel Fernández, reiterated the need for producer and consumer countries to work together in the search for solutions to the drug trafficking problem that poses a threat to international security. As main speaker of a meeting at the Council of Latin America, the President shared his views with important businesspeople from all over Latin America. Fernández affirmed the effectiveness of unifying efforts to establish cooperation mechanisms between countries in order to become more efficient in the war against drugs. Fernández said he spoke in July with President Obama about the need to hold a summit that would include the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Central America and the Caribbean. He pointed out that drug traffickers have forged alliances on many fronts including with terrorists and for that reason, the scourge now represents one of the most dangerous threats in the world, according to a press release from the Presidential Office of Information, Press and Publicity. Fernández affirmed the effectiveness of unifying efforts to establish cooperation mechanisms between countries in order to become more efficient in the war against drugs. In his speech, he reiterated that drug trafficking is one of the major challenges facing many Latin American governments. Fernández explained that the Dominican Republic is currently in a transition process wherein it aspires to an economy that promotes high tech in order to efficiently achieve its development goals. He said the DR also aspires to train better human resources so that those producing the wealth can also aspire to better standards of living to enjoy it. Finally, he reiterated his government’s commitment to create bases for converting the country into a developed nation, hence the National Development Strategy which seeks, among other things, to create a balance between the strengthening of democracy and social development. | ||
