The “Island Horizons” exhibition opens June 3 Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, 05/27/2011
On Friday, June 3rd at 7:00p.m., the Ministry of Culture, the Government of the Canaries, the Spanish Cultural Action of the Government of Spain, and the Museum of Modern Art will open the group exhibition “Island Horizons”, a project that brings together art work by artists from eleven territories worldwide.
The exhibition is an initiative of the Septenio program of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Spanish Cultural Action of the Government of Spain (AC/E), under the direction of Canarians Orlando Britto (artistic curator) and Nile Palenzuela (literary coordinator).
Dominican artist Belkis Ramírez plays host in this presentation of Island Horizons at the MAM, where she shares the stage with Teresa Arozena and Gregorio Gonzalez (Canary Islands), Ricardo Barbeito (Madeira), Maria José Cavaco (Azores), Joëlle Ferly (Guadeloupe) Tchalé Figueira (Cape Verde), Thierry Hoarau (La Reunion), Sandra Ramos (Cuba), Roseman Robinot (French Guiana), Shirley Rufin (Martinique) and Julio Suarez (Puerto Rico).
“The exhibition contains works, including the drawings, paintings, the installation, the photography, video and animation, which talk about the geography and the nature and actions of the human beings in it, the complexity and diversity of the spaces, and the perceptions and narratives that are generated inside them and from them,” as Orlando Britto, head of the artistic part of the project, describes.
This is the third stop the project makes during its international tour, as it was exhibited in the Canary Islands (Spain) in 2010 and in Madeira (Portugal) in the first quarter of 2011. After visiting the Dominican capital, the exhibition will travel to the Wilfredo Lam Contemporary Art Center in Havana (Cuba) and the Clement Foundation in Martinique.
The exhibition will remain open from June 3 to July 10 at the Museum of Modern Art in the Dominican Republic, located on Avenida Pedro Henríquez Ureña, Plaza de la Cultura Juan Pablo Duarte, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesdays through Sundays.
