“Horizontes Insulares” Comes to the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo The Ministry of Culture, the government of the Canary Islands, the Spanish Cultural Action society of the government of Spain and the Dominican Museum of Modern Art will inaugurate the group show “Horizontes Insulares.” The exhibition is a project that brings together paintings and artwork done by artists from eleven regions around the world. The inauguration of the exhibition will take place on Friday, June 3rd at 7:00 pm in the Museum of Modern Art, Santo Domingo. “The intention of the exhibition is to look at drawing, painting, installations, photography, video and animation that deals with geography, nature and human beings and the role they play in nature, the complexity and diversity of spaces and perceptions and the narratives generated in and from these disciplines,” The exhibition is an initiative of the Seven Year Anniversary Program of the Canary Islands and the Spanish Cultural Action society of the government of Spain (AC/E) under the direction of Canary Island residents Orlando Britto (artistic curator) and Nilo Palenzuela (literary coordinator). Dominican artist, Belkis Ramírez, will act as hostess of Horizontes Insulares at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM in Spanish) where she will share the space with other artists from around the world including Teresa Arozena and Gregorio González (Canary Islands), Ricardo Barbeito (Madeira, Portugal), María José Cavaco (Azores, Portugal), Joëlle Ferly (Guadalupe), Tchalé Figueira (Cape Verde), Thierry Hoarau (Réunion Island, France), Sandra Ramos (Cuba), Roseman Robinot (French Guyana), Shirley Rufin (Martinique) and Julio Suárez (Puerto Rico). “The intention of the exhibition is to look at drawing, painting, installations, photography, video and animation that deals with geography, nature and human beings and the role they play in nature, the complexity and diversity of spaces and perceptions and the narratives generated in and from these disciplines,” said Orlando Britto, artistic curator of the project. This is the third stop on the road for this international project that initially started in the Canary Islands in 2010 then went to Madeira, Portugal for the first three months of 2011. After its stay in the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo, the show will travel to the Wilfredo Lam Contemporary Art Center in Havana, Cuba then to the Fondation Clément in Martinique. The show will be opened to the public from June 3rd until July 10th in the Museum of Modern Art in the Dominican Republic. The Museum is on Pedro Henríquez Ureña Ave, Juan Pablo Duarte Culture Plaza, Santo Domingo. The Museum is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., from Tuesday through Sunday.
