Three New Schools Opened in Azua and San Cristobal

The Minister of Education, Josefina Pimentel, inaugurated two schools in Azua and one in San Cristobal on Wednesday, out of a total of 11, which are part of a program of school openings that began on Friday June 10th and will continue around the country throughout June and into July.


“This investment will contribute to the wellbeing of the student population and to the progress of this hardworking community, for that reason we are asking parents, teachers and administrators and our beloved children to take good care of these buildings and to regard them prized possession for the common good that must be preserved,”


In the province of Azua, Quisqueya I School was inaugurated. The school was built with reinforced concrete at a cost of $12,587,982.55 Dominican pesos.

As main speaker at the opening ceremony, Minister Pimentel said that with the support of individuals and institutions, the Ministry of Education (MINERD) is moving forward in its goal to provide every Dominican school with an adequate infrastructure which she asked citizens to take care of, stressing that schools are valuable resources that will benefit present and future generations.


“This investment will contribute to the wellbeing of the student population and to the progress of this hardworking community, for that reason we are asking parents, teachers and administrators and our beloved children to take good care of these buildings and to regard them prized possession for the common good that must be preserved,” said Ms. Pimentel.


This building has five classrooms, an early education module with a connected classroom, an administrative area, kitchen, wrought-iron gate in the concrete perimeter wall, recess yard and pre-school area. In addition, it has a dual potable water supply system with a 4,000-gallon capacity cistern and submersible water pump. It has outdoor sanitary and lighting system.


In Azua, another school was opened on Wednesday – the El Caliche School, with in investment of $17,779,815.13 pesos. This center also has five classrooms for basic education and one for early education, a library, administrative area, kitchen, a wrought-iron gate in the concrete perimeter wall, pre-school area, outdoor sanity and lighting system, a dual potable water supply system with a submersible water pump with a capacity to general 4,000 gallons of water.


Meanwhile, in San Cristóbal, La Guama School was inaugurated. This school has nine classrooms for basic education and one module for early education, all of which was built with an investment of $28,052,421.54 pesos.


This building, constructed with reinforced anti-seismic concrete blocks, has an administrative area, all-purpose room, a wrought-iron gate in the concrete perimeter wall, a mixed recess area, preschool area, a dual potable water supply system with a 6,000-gallon capacity cistern and submersible water pump, a water tank and outdoor lighting and sanitary installations.


Raising the levels of schools is one of the key elements being undertaken by the Ministry of Education, which is taking charge of the construction, repair and maintenance of classrooms needed to create challenging educational environments. It also seeks to provide attractive, well-equipped schools that have access to a variety of materials and the sufficient means to offer high level, quality education.


Through the General Directorate of School Buildings and funding from the Central Government as well as international organizations such as the World Bank, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Ministry of Education has built more than 250 educational establishments, repaired more than a thousand classrooms and intends to build nearly two thousand more.
