V National 2011 Dominican Republic Surf Competition “Cabo Mongó Eko Surf”, Jaragua National Park, August 6, 2011 Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, 08/07/2011
The Dominican Surfing Federation (FEDOSURF) will hold ” Cabo Mongó Eko Surf “, the fifth National Surf Competition of the 2011 season, on Saturday, August 6, in Jaragua National Park, the largest protected area of the country. The event, which takes place in the province of Pedernales, in the southwest of the country, is the first of its kind to be held in a National Park.

Surfers from around the country will be provided with bus transportation for a weekend Surf Camp and Surfari, and transported to the beach, which is accessible only by boat, across Laguna de Oviedo. The weekend activities will also include a fishing tournament with members of the Fishermen’s Cooperative of Juancho and Pedernales, a beach cleanup, and scuba-diving activities with Reef Check.
Jaragua National Park offers abundant natural, cultural and recreational opportunities, and excellent conditions for water sports and surfing in all its forms. “Our goal is to develop surfing and encourage the preservation of these protected areas, as well as to promote tourism,” noted Nestor Puente, FEDOSURF president. The competition is sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment and co-sponsored by EGE-Haina Los Cocos Wind Farm, the Navy, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation, the Dominican Olympic Committee, and the Bioenergy Consortium.

Jaragua National Park is located between the islands of Beata and Alto Velo. It is dominated by large areas of dry forest, and is home to special flora and fauna with a high level of endemic species. Similarly, several species of mangroves line its shores. It has a marine lagoon system, including the Laguna de Oviedo, one of the largest in the country, which provides refuge for over 70 species of birds, both resident and migratory. The marine area offers beautiful long beaches, coral reefs and rocky shores.
The long coastline surrounding Jaragua National Park has favorable conditions for the sport of surfing, with a variety of sandy bottoms, reefs and outer reef point breaks. The peninsula has great consistency year round, receiving waves from the Northeast, East, and Southeast. The tranquility, remoteness and natural beauty of the area, combined with the availability of satellite prognosis and prediction of movement of the waves and wind offer much incentive for discovery and adventure. FEDOSURF, established in 2002, is the National Governing Body of surfing in the Dominican Republic. FEDOSURF is recognized by the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD), the Ministry of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (MIDEREC), the International Surfing Association (ISA) and the Pan American Surfing Association (PASA). It is a non-profit entity, the main goal of which is to support and advance the sport of surfing and high-performance athletes in the Dominican Republic.
