Around 400 La Salle Students Participated in the “Seventh La Salle High School Model United Nations 2011”

Around 400 students of the Dominican La Salle High School participated for two days in the “Seventh La Salle High School Model United Nations 2011,” an exercise that simulates more than 10 bodies and commissions of the United Nations and other multilateral, regional and international institutions.

Gabriela Cepeda said “It’s time to confront existing global issues that we can no longer continue to ignore. It’s time for young people to take action: “We need a good dose of youthful spirit at a time when the world appears to be going backwards.”

The goal of the activity held on October 12 and 13 was to provide an educational tool to La Salle students that would involve them in matters of international interest, help develop their negotiation skills and leadership profiles, and handle situations requiring an immediate response.

During the opening of the activity, the Secretary General of the seventh La Salle Model United Nations (LMUN) said that this educational method, which is more than a simple simulation, promises to be a space for dialogue and integrated development for the student body. She added that during the course of the activity, instead of being referred to by name, each participant will be identified by the interests, policies and ideologies of their assigned country.”

She added that this year, the La Salle Model United Nations aimed to be innovative and recognized for the good performance of the delegates, who are the reason for this exercise.

The LMUN 2011 Secretary General urged the participants to feel free to express their ideas, saying what others would not. “Take ownership of the moment and let it stand for what you can experience between today and tomorrow.” “As youth, I invite you to innovate with new ideas and proposals. The world is yours and it is relying on you to build it on strong foundations. Act in unity and honor our name, “United Nations Organization.”

For two days, the La Salle students worked in roundtables to develop their negotiation capacity, establish interrelationships between students in different grades, learn about the operations of the various bodies and agencies of the United Nations Organization and their main functions, and determine their internal leadership.

Finally, she said that the work focused on giving the students a comprehensive vision of situations of international and national interest and putting La Salle values into practice in a diplomatic context, defending their positions in the service of other countries.
