DR Culture Ministry Holds Seminar on Literary Criticism

The Ministry of Culture will hold the First Seminar on Literary Criticism in the Dominican Republic on February 24 and 25.


“The seminar will attempt to provide a response to the many questions related to the evolution of the Dominican literary movement, its projection and development by establishing guidelines for the knowledge and dissemination of our national literature,” said Mr. Belliard.


A total of 22 writers and critics from inside and outside the country have been invited to participate in the event which will be held at the Hotel Intercontinental from 9-6 pm on both days.

Basilio Belliard, director of Gestión Literaria, who is coordinating the seminar, said “there is a great deal of enthusiasm among those who will be participating in the event and, judging from the titles of their speeches, it is going to be a very high level, intellectual gathering.”


“The seminar will attempt to provide a response to the many questions related to the evolution of the Dominican literary movement, its projection and development by establishing guidelines for the knowledge and dissemination of our national literature,” said Mr. Belliard.


The list of confirmed participants, so far, includes: Diógenes Céspedes, Manuel Matos Moquete, Bruno Rosario Candelier, José Enrique García, Odalís Pérez, Manuel Núñez, Manuel García Cartagena, Andrés L. Mateo, Fernando Cabrera, Pura Emeterio Rondón, León David, Plinio Chahín, Soledad Álvarez and Enrique Eusebio.


Coming from outside the Dominican Republic are the following experts on Dominican Literature: Rita de Maesenner from Belgium; Ester Gimbernat, from Denver, Colorado; Nina Bruni, from Trinidad-Tobago.


Dominican writers established in the United States will also attend, and they include: Miguel Aníbal Perdomo, Silvio Torres-Saillant and Médar Serrata. Dominican writers in Puerto Rico who have confirmed are Eugenio García Cuevas and Miguel Ángel Fornerín.


The inauguration of the Seminar on Literary Criticism in the Dominican Republic will be held on Friday February 24th at 10:00 am, with an opening speech by Culture Minister José Rafael Lantigua. The seminar will end on Saturday February 25th at 6:00 pm with a speech about the conclusions to be given by the poet and event coordinator, Basilio Belliard along with writers, Ángela Hernández and Valentín Amaro.
