Doctor Alejandro Herrera, Secretary of State and Director General of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC in Spanish), called the substantial increase in operations of airports around the country a significant contribution to the economic development of the Dominican Republic.

Making public the data on operations of the country’s domestic airports for 2011, Mr. Herrera noted the increase in civil aviation reflected in the statistics and its resulting contribution to the country’s economy.

“This past year, the total number of operations in Dominican airports increased by 1.27%, surpassing the 76,600 operations of 2010; in 2011, the number of operations was 77,571,” declared Herrera, when making public the data on last year’s operations.

He explained that the airport terminal with the largest number of registered operations was Las Américas International Airport with 28,546 operations in 2011, followed by Punta Cana International Airport  with 28,385.

A press release from the Public Relations Office of IDAC which publishes declarations from the Director General as well as up-to-date statistics, also stressed that there was a notable increase in the flow of international passengers entering and leaving the Dominican Republic.

“The flow of international arrivals and departures went from by 9.3 million people to 9.6 million, representing a 3.34% growth. This rise was due to a 6.27% increase in the number of regular flights with respect to 2010. The growth experienced by this sector was due to the expansion of new routes and the frequency of flights in the tourism sector of the country,” explained IDAC Director Herrera.

Evaluating the increase in operations as well as arrivals and departures of passengers in Dominican airports has led IDAC’s technical and administrative teams to conclude that there is a connection between the role of civil aviation and the positive economic growth of the nation.

“The numerous tourism attractions that exist here, among them being the trust and confidence people have in Dominican air travel, has drawn more and more airline companies and tourists to show a great interest in flying to our country,” concluded the Secretary of State Alejandro Herrera.
