Culture Starts Program: “Create your own library”

As partof the activities programmed for the next International Book Fairin SantoDomingo, the Ministryof Culture (MINC for its acronym in Spanish), through the General Directorate ofthe Book Fairand theGeneral Directorate of Booksand Reading,has created aninnovative programto establish libraries throughout the Dominican Republic.

The library may be created in a family home or in a public place, for your family or for your community. As long as there is adequate shelving, MINC may provide the books necessary for the creation of a society of readers.

The program “Create your own library” not only seeks to promote the creation of spaces for reading but also to promote national literature through the donation of books. Additionally, it seeks to building family, institutional or community libraries.

MINCwill donatebetween 25and 300books topersonal libraries, and between 400 and1000 books to institutional libraries. All books will be by Dominican authors. The program does not apply tobusinesses orinstitutions that already own a library.

The requirements for applying are: Send the name of the person or institution, age, type of library (private or institutional), mailing address, e-mail and telephone number.The request may be submitted electronically through bibliotecaenconstruccionminc@hotmail.com, or in person at the General Directorate of Books and Reading, between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday, before April 10.

A representative of the General Directorate of Booksand Reading will visit the requesting persons or institutions to determine what the appropriate bibliographical contributions should bein each case.
