Students face off during the first day of the Third Batalla de los Cuentos (Battle of the Stories) More than 400 teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 are participating in this contest, which aims to motivate young people to read and compete in a healthy manner. Read, read, read is what the more than 400 participants have done during this reading competition, in order to learn more about the national and Latin American literature and, of course, win one of the three prizes being offered by this Batalla de los Cuentos. Nerves, excitement and joy were some of the emotions that the students competing in the third edition of the reading contest “Batalla de los Cuentos” have said they were feeling. The competition is taking place at the Children and Youth Library in the Dominican Republic (BIJRD for its acronym in Spanish), in which hundreds of youth and adolescents from different schools are participating. The teams, each made up of four participants, filled all areas of the BIJRD while answering the first questionnaire related to the works and stories they had read so far during the competition, which referred to the characters, the plot, and the author, among other subjects. During the first stage of the battle, young people read the writings of Juan Rulfo, HoracioQuiroga, Julio Cortazar, Adolfo BioyCasares and Gabriel García Márquez. Read, read, read is what the more than 400 participants have done during this reading competition, in order to learn more about the national and Latin American literature and, of course, win one of the three prizes being offered by this Batalla de los Cuentos. Participants in thisthirdedition of theBatalla de los Cuentos are highschoolstudentsfromvariousschools, amongwhich are the Colegio Bilingüe New Horizons, Escuela Primaria República de Brasil, Liceo Estados Unidos de América, Escuela República de Panamá, Colegio San Pio X, Instituto Politécnico Pilar Constanzo, Colegio Evangélico Central, Politécnico Santa Ana, and Colegio Logos, and others. Dynamics of the competition There are 120 teams participating in this contest, each of which consists of four participants facing off during two rounds. In each round, together, they complete questionnaires about the works they have read. At each meet they will add up scoring points, which then will allow a selection of the four highest scoring teams that will participate in the final meet in front of a panel made up by the authors of the works they have read. This year’s winners will receive mini laptops, iPods and digital cameras.
