The Spanish Cultural Center invites to the series “Cine a Contracorriente. Diálogos, confluencias, divergencias… en los últimos 80 años“, a selection of experimental short films fromLatinAmericaand Spain. The series will take place from March 29 to April 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the Dominican Cinematheque. Admission is free of charge.

The second session, which is made up of 9 films, is entitled “Cápsulas de tiempo (Time Capsules)”. Some of these films illustrate scenes of everyday life or fetish-like looks regarding popular culture. Others depict the exchange of intimate and critical perspectives on social oppression and documentary practice.

The selection ofshort filmsillustrates the unconventional types of pictures that have been produced in Latin America and in Spain since the 50’s, with productions ranging from authors’ documentary films to experimental, alternative and animation movies. The compilation of these films allows the envisioning of the convergences and divergences of moviesthat have been made in such distant places, while bringing the public closer to that “other type of movies” whichis not commercially viable.

The 59 titles that make up the selection of short films are divided into six sessions (one session per day), that have been proposed by the project’s curatorial team composed by AntoniPinet, Rubén Guzmán, Marta LucíaVélez and Angélica Cuevas Portilla.

The first session, “Revolución y contracultura (Revolution and counter-culture)” which opens the series, is composed of 5 films portraying the cultural and intellectual irate rebellion of the iconic sixties, in which audiovisual media becomes a heavy weapon to try to reach the utopic social changes and the transformation of the rigid systems that prevailed throughout the world at that time.

The third session, “Interferencias (Interferences)” showcases 15 short films that play with the screen time, with the picture and sound, and often generate rich and disturbing layers of visual perception.

Señales de Vida (Signs of Life)” is the fourth session, comprising 9 films that illustrate the conscious and unconscious memory of images seen and dreamed by an individual and a society. The fifth session is entitled “Ejercicios de estilo (Exercises in style)”, showcasing 10 films that move toward the experimental genrethrough image processing.

The last session, “Medio y Masaje (Medium and Massage),” includes 11 new stories that use old films to enhance the value of classic films and create new meaning for their contents.
