Book Fair 2012 to Present New Art and Literature Exhibitions The Ministry of Culture will open nine cultural exhibitions at this year’s 15th International Book Fair 2012 Santo Domingo, a magnificent event that opens on April 18 and runs through May 6th. The International Book Fair of Santo Domingo is the most important cultural event in the Caribbean. It is held annually and organized by the Dominican Ministry of Culture. This year’s venue for the Book Fair is the Juan Pablo Duarte Culture Plaza. The Fair runs from April 18 through May 6th. The International Book Fair (FIL in Spanish) will dedicate various spaces for the projection of visual arts through nine different cultural exhibitions on the lives and work of important national and international literary figures. The first exhibition will begin on April 12 with “Juan Ramón Sobre el Papel” ` (Juan Ramon on Paper) at the Museum of Modern Art, under the patronage of the Spanish Embassy. This painting exhibition includes the reading of a prose poem by Spanish writer, Juan Ramón Jiménez and the participation of artists from Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, Spain and the Dominican Republic. Also on the first day of the Book Fair, the public exhibition of “Las Grandes figuras de la FIL en 15 años,” (Outstanding Figures of 15 Years of the Book Fair) will also open along the front gates of Culture Plaza. This exhibition will show the faces of the most relevant literary personalities who have participated in the Book Fair since it first opened in 1998. On April 19 several exhibitions will be inaugurated and homage will be paid to María Montez and Enriquillo Sánchez at the Dominican Cinemateque and the Museum of Modern Art, respectively. “Mario Vargas Llosa, la libertad y la vida” is the title of the exhibition screening which looks at different aspects of the life and work of the author of the “Fiesta del Chivo” leading up his winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2010. The Museum of the Dominican Man will be the venue for this exhibition, which has already toured Lima, Stockholm, Paris, Algiers Mexico City, Bogota and Spain. Santo Domingo is the first capital city in the Caribbean to receive it. In addition, the Museum of Modern Art will host the Central American Contemporary Art Exhibition. Participating artists include Nicaraguan painters, Cristina Cuadra and Marcos Agudelo; Lourdes de la Riva and Regina José Galíndo from Guatemala; Sila Chanto and Roxana Nagygeller from Costa Rica; Mauricio Esquivel from El Salvador; Ana Garuz from Panama, Santiago Cal from Belice and Hondurans, Ballardo Blandino and Santos Arzú Quioto. Likewise the Museum of Natural History and Geography will be the venue for a Guatemalan photo exhibition called “Chanpilandia” and the Bicentennial of El Salvador, Central American, which is the region of honor at this year’s International Book Fair. Finally, for photography lovers, comes the exhibition, “Personalidades, risas, sonrisas y carcajadas” (Personalities, Smiles, Laughs and Guffaws” at the Museum of Modern Art. This is an original photographic exhibition by Francis Arias. The International Book Fair of Santo Domingo is the most important cultural event in the Caribbean.
