The Ministry of Culture, the New Architecture Group, Inc. (GNA in Spanish), the Society of Architects of the Dominican Republic (SARD in Spanish) and the Museum of Modern Art recently published the rules and regulations for the 11th International Architecture Biennial of Santo Domingo 2012, which will take place from November 3 to December 3 at the Museum of Modern Art.


The activity held to provide information about the Biennial was presided over by Lourdes Camilo de Cuello, Deputy Minister of Culture; Omar Rancier, president of New Architecture and Bichara Khoury, president of the Society of Architecture.


The objective of the International Architecture Biennial of Santo Domingo is to promote urban, national and international architectural production for all projects whether ongoing or already completed within Dominican territory or abroad, which are worthy of being disseminated on merits of theme, innovative criteria, adequate use of advanced technology and/or architecture that possess other attributes that can be beneficial.


The activity held to provide information about the Biennial was presided over by Lourdes Camilo de Cuello, Deputy Minister of Culture; Omar Rancier, president of New Architecture and Bichara Khoury, president of the Society of Architecture.


The International Architecture Biennial of Santo Domingo (BIASD in Spanish), based on a contest involving assembly and presentation over a period of one month, is an Exhibition of Projects involving Architectural Work and Urbanism; Interior Architecture; Landscape Architecture; Restorative Architecture; Theory, Criticism and/or History as well as topics related to these categories.


Prizes in the various areas include: the Grand Biennial Prize for RD$ 400,000.00; the Architecture Prize for RD$ 150,000.00; the Architecture Design Project Prize for RD$ 100,000.00; Urban Design with an RD$ 150,000.00 prize and the Urban Design Project which will receive an RD$ 100,000.00 cash prize.


Other categories are Theory, History and/or Criticism of Architecture and/or Urbanism for a cash prize of RD$ 125,000.00; Interior Design for RD$ 100,000.00; Landscape Architecture for RD$ 100,000.00 and Restoration of Monuments with a prize of RD$ 125,000.00.


The José A Caro Student Prizes are offering first prize, RD$ 30,000.00, second prize of RD$ 20,000.00 and a third prize of RD$ 10,000.00.


No BIASD organizing group, Jury Selection or Judges are permitted to participate in the Biennial Confrontation unless they have expressly specified that they will not participate in the competition and this caveat must be accepted by the Organizing Committee.


The Jury Selection will be comprised of Dominicans who will not have a deciding vote. Their purpose will be to oversee the competition’s Rules and Regulations and to assure that they are fulfilled to the letter, making exceptions only in the face of circumstances out of their control that must be solved and approved by the Organizing Committee.


The Jury will be comprised of three (3) foreigners with deciding votes and one (1) Dominican who will act as an assistant to dispel any doubts and/or to offer non-committal explanations of the deliberations. This individual will be at the disposition of the Jury only at their request for assistance. The Jury can award as many Honorable Mentions as they consider pertinent and can declare any category to be voided from the competition. The decisions taken by this Jury cannot be appealed.


This year’s Honor’s Committee will be made up of representatives from the Ministry of Culture and/or represented by the Deputy Minister of Cultural Heritage and the Board of the Museum of Modern Art (MAM in Spanish), the Embassy of Spain, the Society of Architects of the Dominican Republic and the New Architecture Group.


The 11th INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE BIENNIAL OF SANTO DOMINGO will be open from November 3rd to December 3rd at the Museum of Modern Art of the Dominican Republic, which is located in the Juan Pablo Duarte Culture Plaza. Museum hours are: Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. a 5:00 p.m.
