The new vision for and restructuring of the Ministry of Culture are unveiled Luis O. Brea Franco, a member of the technical team from the Ministry of Culture, participated in Natasha Sanchez’s traditional get together, in which he spoke aboutthe new vision and the policies that will be implemented at the institution that the new Minister of Culture, Jose Antonio Rodriguez, is heading. He noted that the core themes to be developed during the next four years include the consolidation of the institutions that make up the cultural sector… During his presentation, he argued that, under the guidance of President Danilo Medina, the general visionis to evaluate and reassess the creators of culture and heritage, with a view to creating a sense of belonging among the people and converting the cultural activities into a productive engine. He noted that the core themes to be developed during the next four years include the consolidation of the institutions that make up the cultural sector, so that they reach a larger number of people; defend and preserve the heritage; exhibit the works of artists and promote cultural industries. He stressed that the program has an institutional framework, a legal framework and various programs to optimizethe management of culture. Among the objectives,Brea Franco highlighted the restructuring of the Plaza de la Cultura and also the creation and recovery of cultural spaces in which the people can participate. The promotion and revival of the Centro Nacional de Artesanía(National Craft Centre) is under consideration, in line with the country’s population growth and the creation ofthe craft villages. According to the new policies, the Ministries of Culture, Education, Tourism, Sports and the Environment must cooperate among themselves, by implementing various programs that reach the Dominican people, giving priority to those programs that include the disabled. Brea Franco was part of the team that, for two years, sought the best technicians in the various disciplines in order to develop a coherent cultural project that would meet the needs of the Dominican people. The Natasha Sanchez’s get togethers began in 1986, when Juan Bosch was in the middle of his electoral campaign and was staying at his friend Mario Sánchez Guzmán (Ms Sanchez’s father)’s house, to recover from a physical ailment.
