The Cabarete Classic 2007 draws to a close successfully

Almost a hundred people participated in the second edition of this tournament dedicated to windsurf in the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican windsurfer Pablito Guzman can feel satisfied. The second edition of his Classic Cabarete was a complete success. The contest, which took place last weekend, has left very pleasant moments and great number of winners.

More than seventy contestants from the Dominican Republic, Canada and Curacao, among other countries, met at the surfing tournament. After three intense contest days coping with the light wind, the results have been more than positive.

“I feel satisfied for the great participation of national and foreign competitors”, Guzman stated. The event started last year “with the purpose of keeping the spirit of windsurfers alive in this town and meet with friends from all over the world in a gathering that highlights the importance of our discipline”. Moreover, he added, “for this reason, this year we put a lot more effort in giving continuity to what we achieved in our first tournament and in keep growing as a platform of new actions in the field of water sports”.

Antonio Esteban held the first place at the Open Formula, Raul Marquez the second place and Jaime Santos, the third. In Formula Sport the Dominican Samuel Perez Hults climbed to the first position (he also did it for the Open Men Slalom Freestyle), followed by Antoine Langeard and Jerson Apolinar.

In the Open Slalom, Ingmar Schitzer from Curacao came first; the Dominican Emilio Muñoz occupied the second place and Antonio Esteban the third. In the Sport Slalom Antoine Langeard conquered the first place and Robertico Diaz and Olivier Tellier followed him closely. Women also shined with their participation in the same category: Hilde Tuinbeek, Michelle Bourdeau and Myriam Lang-Willard occupied the first places.

The 2007 edition of the Classic Cabarete added a special and exclusive category. “Bussines Slalom” was named after the intention of allowing the participation of older competitors who practiced the sport for several years but are now away from the sea. Udo Jansen led this group with no trouble. Gordon Gannon and Marcus Bohm occupied the second and third place.

Children Participation

The Dominicans Arismendi Gonzales and Federico Arias Yilo won the first and second place respectively, in the Junior Slalom (12 to 16 years of age); Victor Wederfourt from Curacao won the third place.

In the Mini Junior category (7 to 11 years of age), Felix Martina, Marco Van der Woude and Nico Suriel took over the first three places respectively. In the Mini Junior Sport category Gino Martina, Delio Placido and Jeremy Routhier stood out. Among the girls, Naomi Routhier, Tati Suriel and Paola Fix were the winners.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Who is Pablito Guzman?

He is the most successful windsurf competitor the Dominican Republic has had throughout the last decade at the national and international level. He is also, with no doubt, the strength behind this event. He founded it and brought it to life last year. Now he continues with his mission thanks to the support of all Cabarete community.

Cabarete: sports paradise
Beach, delightful flavors, nightlife and exciting sports. That is Cabarete, an alternative paradise located in the northern region of the Dominican Republic.

A six km. beach, a wide variety of lodging and dining options throughout a long road. It is a very different part of our country. A tourist community, sports lovers and party lovers –one could add- located in the Puerto Plata province where “cibaeño”, Spanish, English, German and French are widely spoken; and throughout time has become a true center of young, independent and “anti all included” tourism. It attracts the interest not only of foreign visitors, but it’s also accountable for a large portion of domestic tourism.

In conclusion, Cabarete is a very particular town. A destiny with a varied lodging offer that includes from picturesque hostels “bed and breakfast” type –Villa Taina and Cita del Sol, for instance- to apartments –Agualina, Velero, Kite Beach or the Extreme Hotel, to name a few-  and resorts, such as the Viva Wyndham Tangerine Hotel, Punta Goleta or Azurro Club. Different options for different budgets. That simple.

However, its fame and popularity is basically due to two well-known reasons. In one hand, its sports tradition.  On the other hand, the already known “cabaretero mood” that includes an interesting nightlife, delightful dining options and never ending sources of entertainment  along the beach.

Due to its special features, 15 to 25 knots winds coming from the Atlantic Ocean as well as the safety provided to surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers by the current’s direction, Cabarete is considered to be one of the best beaches in the world to practice sports related to surfboards, sailboats. Such attractions have influenced lovers of different sports to settle in this region for good.  Likewise for specialized schools and training centers.

Cabarete is also home to multiple events and sports tournaments. Just like “Pablito Guzman Cabarete Classic”, and “The Master of the Ocean”, it is one of the top stops of the PKRA.
