Domingo Liz, a renowned Dominican artist, was declared the winner of the Visual Arts National Award for the year 2012, during a meeting of the selection committee that was chaired by the Minister of Culture, José Antonio Rodríguez.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place during the month of February, 2013, and it will be chaired by the Minister of Culture.

The selection was made on the basis ofhis hard work and artistic career, and because of Liz’s creation of paradigmatic images in which he highlights Dominican cultural identity.

The selection committee consisted of Elena Ditrén, director of the Museum of Modern Art; Mirna Guerrero, director of the BellapartMuseum,and Rafael Emilio Yunén, director of the Eduardo León JimenesCultural Center.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place during the month of February, 2013, and it will be chaired by the Minister of Culture.

Among other things, the committee took into consideration that the winner of the aforementioned award is the only visual artist who has been recognized as a master drawer, sculptor and painter.

In addition, the information provided by the Ministry of Culture’s Communications Department indicates that he has dedicated his life to teaching the arts and that he has contributed to building the foundation of Dominican art,starting during the second half of the twentieth century.

Domingo Liz was born in Santo Domingo in 1931. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts. His work spans all the way throughthe spectrum from figurative art to abstract art, always demonstrating a great sense of the pure and synthetic forms of the integration of the elements.

He held his first solo exhibit in 1969 at the Palacio de BellasArtes, and the second in 1989, at the Museum of Modern Art.

He has received awards at national and international biennials. Among his works are “El Ángel de la Libertad” in 1972, and “Origen I y Origen II”, considered emblematic pieces of the national sculpture; and the painting “Figura del Ozama” in 1979.
