The publication series, RESEARCH AND IDEAS, includes research papers, articles and speeches that address critical issues of the contemporary world, from the national, regional and global perspectives.


These publications, on a wide range of social and economic topics, came out in 2012/2013 as part of the “RESEARCH AND IDEAS” collection. The GFDD and FUNGLODE inspired series has been written by experts is based on profound research that features recommendations for maximizing social benefits and aims to become a resourceful tool for further dialogues on these matters.



  •  “El Metro and the Impacts of Transportation System Integration in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic” by Carl Allen, GFDD Fellow and graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School Master’s Program in Public Policy and Urban Planning.

The publication presents a comprehensive study on poverty alleviation, congestion, pollution reduction, urban development and social and economic advancement.   • “Empowerment of Women in Democracies of Developing Countries: The Experience of the Dominican Republic” by Rosa Rita Alvarez, Executive Director of Dominican Women in Development, Inc. (MUDE).

The book delves into the situation of women in the Dominican Republic in terms of their progress, achievements and challenges to reach gender equality, get access to decision-making procedures, improve health care and security issues, and advance economic integration.

  • “The Presence of Africa in the Caribbean, the Antilles and the United States” introduces the views of 16 national and international specialists, who participated in the international conference “African Presence in the Caribbean, the Antilles and the United States,” which was held by GFDD/FUNGLODE, on July 18-20, 2011.

This publication brings together the views of Dominican writers, including Celsa Albert Batista, Lipe Collado, Franklin J. Franco, José Guerrero, Rafael Jarvis Luis, Mateo Morrison, Odalis G. Pérez, Geo Ripley, José Luis Sáez, Avelino Stanley and Darío Solano, and international authors, such as Delia Blanco, Patrick Bellegarde-Smith, Jean Ghasmann Bissainthe, Melina Pappademos and Roger Toumson.

  •  “Retos de la educacion a distancia” features Dr. Heitor Gurgulino de Souza’s speech given at the opening of “Virtual Educa Caribe 2011.” This international meeting brings together NGOs, the public and private sectors to discuss educational and professional training issues with the aim to promote innovations amongst the Dominican labor force.

It is important to mention that Dr. Gurgulino served as a dean of the United Nations University in Japan and a Special Adviser to the Director General at UNESCO HQ in Paris.

This volume compiled by Yosmayra E. Reyes is a result of the long research process conducted by her under the supervision of Dr. Alberto Fiallo Billini, Public Health Advisor to the former President of the Dominican Republic, Dr. Leonel Frenández.
