The new edition of Mateo’s novel, available for purchase, is 181 pages and will sell for 395 pesos. Andrés Mateo is a philologist, poet, novelist, educator and speaker. Referring to this new edition, Mateo said his novel “is a story of love and the times.” The first chapter – in which the protagonist thinks his wife is cheating on him. The book was originally written in the seventies and is based on “absolutely real incidents that occurred inthe Don Bosco neighborhood,” where the author grew up. “A girl called Nancy lived across the street from my house. She would go out everyday carrying her violin case,” he explained. “She would go up HilarioEspertín Street then get lost onRosa Duarte Street – back before the street was named 27th of February. No one knew where she was going or what she was doing. That gave way to incessant whispering on the part of the neighbors.” One of the connecting threads of the novel recreates the celebration of the Anniversary Week of Dominican Radio and Television–the private property of Petán Trujillo– during the 1950s. It was a very popular event attended by all the big names in show business, whoappeared “amid the moral, political, social and human asphyxia of the dictatorship. It was the only moment of fulfillment for PetánTrujillo, as brother of the dictator,” observes Mateo. |
