In what hasn’t been exercised in more than a decade unfolded this past U.S. presidential election in November. An astounding 1.8 million Puerto Ricans in the island cast their ballot in a nonbinding referendum – 54 percent voted against the current “commonwealth” status.

- Antonio Nadal, Professor and Deputy Chairperson of the Department of Puerto Rican and Latino Studies and co-coordinator of the Caribbean Studies Program at Brooklyn College
- Edwin Meléndez, Professor of Urban Affairs and Planning at Hunter College and the Director of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies
