“Crossover, arte y ciencia,” a joint exhibition of Soucy de Pellerano and Paula Messina

C  rossover, arte y ciencia (Crossover, art and science) is the name of the joint exhibit being presented by Soucy de Pellerano and Paula Messina -artists from different generations-, under the sponsorship of Fundación Imagen 83 and Centro de la Imagen, in which they switch roles: one artist using x-ray films to express her art and a doctor specializing in medical imaging using photography and radiographic films in a different way to make art.

The exhibition consists of thirty pieces of various formats, and it is curated by Carlos Acero Ruiz. The exhibition will remain open until the beginning of August at Centro de la Imagen, located on Calle Archbishop Merino No. 456, in the Colonial City. During the time that the exhibit will remain open other parallel activities related to the theme of the exhibition, as well as a discussion with the artists, will take place.

Science is not alien to Pellerano who, before graduating from the School of Fine Arts, had obtained her degree of Doctor of Pharmacy from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo. Messina, meanwhile, has always considered that reading and interpreting the images is a creative-scientific exercise that she conducts every day in her practice.

Both artists share the theme of women from different angles. Pellerano addresses it through motherhood, suffering, oppression, and the reinterpretation of great works of art, as well as the lives of prominent women in the field of international visual arts, as is the case of Frida Kahlo. For her part, Messina, with a more conceptual work, which is direct and supported through scientific rigor, shows us objects and feminine details, fantasies and accessories that have been abandoned by her patients who have undergone medical imaging, mainly linked to breast cancer.

“In both cases there is a high ritualistic and spiritual component. Despite the formal differences in the resolution of their works, there are many similarities between these two artists who combine science and art, through signs and symbols, the transition from life to death, from health to sickness, emphasizing that particular sensibility which is only expressed through the eyes of women,” as Carlos Acero Ruiz, Curator of the exhibit, highlighted.
