T he Ministry of Culture held a meeting with officials and representatives of several cultural institutions in this province, where interesting projects to reconstruct cultural pieces that will contribute to the development of culture and tourism in the area were approved.


The meeting, which took place last Saturday, was headed by MinisterJosé Antonio Rodríguez who explained that its objective is to monitor, follow up and listen to the claims of the representatives of the various sectors of the community.


The following projects were approved at the meeting, which was held at Casa Villa Doña Jiménez: the reconstruction of Casa Ruina Doña Emilia Jiménez, with the support of the Ministry of Tourism, and the establishment of the Escuelas Libres (Free Schools) at the Casa de la Promoción de la Iglesia Católica.


Other topics were discussed, including the one related to the residence of Desiderio Arias (1872-1931), who was a prominent Dominican military who excelled in the Northwestern front.


Also discussed were matters related to the Museum of Montecristi. To that end, the Minister instructed the Directorate of Monumental Heritage to follow up on the case.


The Minister was accompanied by Dr. Carlos Salcedo, Director at the Ministry; Carlos Santos, Coordinator of the Vice Ministry of Institutional Development; Congressman Manuel Jiménez; Alberto Valenzuela, from the Technical Directorate; Guillermo Martínez, National Director of Provinces; Nelva Fondeur, Coordinator of the Vice Ministry of Cultural Heritage; Eda Grullón, Director of Monumental Heritage; and Wilfredo Feliz, Director of Underwater Heritage.


On behalf of the province the meeting was attended by: Dr. Zaida Immaculate Tejeda, Governor; Senator Heinz Vieluf Cabrera; Municipal Ombudsman Luis Manuel Reyes; José Luis Bournigal, President of the Chamber of Commerce and the Tourism Cluster; and the provincial Director of Culture, Lurín Vásquez.


During the event the Minister also listened to the concerns and recommendations presented by representatives from several municipalities, including Guayubín and Villa Vásquez.


A commission made of a representative of the municipal and cultural sectors was created to follow up on the issues.


The event concluded with a visit to the historic relic and to the newly restored Casa Museo del Generalísimo Máximo Gómez, located on Avenida Mella in Montecristi.
