The Ministry of Culture, the Museum of Modern Artand the Organizing Committee of the 27th National Visual Arts Biennial Santo Domingo 2013 released the names of the Jury for Selection and Awards, comprised of two national and one international specialist, in keeping with the momentous occasion.


Chus Martínez, Quisqueya Henríguez and Bingene Armenteros have the important task of selecting and awarding the artists who will participate in the 27thVisual Arts Biennial in the areas of painting, sculpture, drawing, graphic arts, photography, video, ceramics, installation art, performance or any combination thereof.

About the Jury


Chus Martínez is from La Coruña, Spain. She is currently Chief Curator at New York City’s Museo del Barrio. Prior to taking this position, she was the Chief Curator of the most recent edition ofdOCUMENTA (13), which is held every five years in Kassel, Germany.She worked as Chief Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (2005-2008) and prior to that, was the Director of the Frankfurter Kunstverein, in Germany (2001-2005).


She also gives classes in esthetic theory at the Instituteof Practical Esthetics at the Fine Arts University in Basel, Switzerland. She writes for various media outlets and regularly gives conferences.


Quisqueya Henríquez was born in Havana, Cuba, but lives in Santo Domingo.  She did her studies at the Institute of Superior Art of Havana and at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo. She is considered one of the best and most talented young artists of the day with outstanding international projection.


Her work has been shown at prestigious national and international art galleries such as: Morris-Healy Gallery in New York; Museum of Contemporary Art of Miami; the Fredric Snitzer Galleryin Coral Gablesand the Ninart Cultural Center in Mexico. She has participated in group- shows at the South Florida Cultural Consortium, the Media and Visual Artist Fellowship Exhibition, Miami Art Museum and the Lehmann Maupin Gallery in New York City.


Bingene Armenteros was born in the Dominican Republic. In 1997, she studied Marketing and Business Administration at Wharton University of Pennsylvania. Later she took an Art History course where she discovered her true passion. In 2001 she earned a Masters in Art History then completed the Art Marketing Program at Christie’s Education.


She has collaborated in the Areíto section of the newspaper, Hoy; Cultural Supplement of Caribe and the Mirada al Arte Magazine. She is currently a columnist of the magazine, MujerÚnica[Unique Woman] “Arte en Casa” and has her own blog: yoyarte.com. She is the director of the GoienaFoundation and Arte Berri and has worked as a professor in Flacso and APEC.


The Museum of Modern Art will be closed from Friday July 19 until August 15 for the mounting of the 27th National Visual Arts Biennial Santo Domingo 2013. The inauguration of the Biennial will take place on Friday August 16 at 7:00 pm at the Museum of Modern Art, located on Pedro HenríquezUreña Ave, Juan Pablo Duarte Culture Plaza.
