Jury of the 27th National Biennial of Visual Arts is announced

The Ministry of Culture, the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) and the Organizing Committee of the 27th National Biennial of Visual Arts Santo Domingo 2013, in accordance with the provisions of the bases of this remarkable event, announced the names of the members of the Selection and Award Jury, which consists of two national and one international experts.


Chus Martínez, Quisqueya Armenteros, and Bingene Henríguez have before them the task of selecting and rewarding the participants of the 27th Biennial in the areas of painting, sculpture, drawing, printing, photography, video, ceramics, installations, performances or any combination thereof.


About the Jury


Chus Martínez is originally from La Coruña, Spain. Currently she is the Chief Curator of the Museo del Barrio in New York City. Previously, she served as Head of the Curatorial Department of the latest edition of dOCUMENTA (13), which takes place every five years in the German city of Kassel. She has been Chief Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona (2005-2008) and, previously, Director of the Frankfurter Kunstverein in Germany (2001-2005).
She also lectures on aesthetic theory at the Institute of Aesthetic Practice of the University of Fine Arts in Basel (Switzerland). In addition, she writes for various communications media and lectures regularly.


Quisqueya Henríquez was born in Havana, Cuba, but settled in Santo Domingo. She studied at the Instituto de Arte Superior of Havana and at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo. She is considered one of the young artists with most promise, better quality and international reputation.
Her works have been showcased at major national and international galleries and museums, such as the Morris-Healy Gallery in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Miami; the Gallery, the Fredric Snitzer Gallery in Coral Gables; and the Ninart Culture Center in Mexico. She has participated in group exhibitions at the South FL Cultural Consortium; the media and visual artist fellowship exhibition at the Miami Art Museum in Miami; and at the Lehmann Maupin Gallery in New York.


Bingene Armenteros was born in the Dominican Republic. In 1997 she studied Marketing and Business Administration at the Wharton University of Pennsylvania. Then, she decided to take a course on the History of Art, where she discovered her true passion. In 2001, she completed an MA in History of Art and Art Marketing at Christie’s Educational program.
She has collaborated with the Areíto section of the newspaper Hoy; the Cultural Supplement of the Caribbean; and with the magazine Mirada al Arte. Currently she is a columnist for the magazine Mujer Única “Arte en Casa,” and she has her own blog yoyarte.com. She is the Director of the Goiena and Arte Berri Foundation. She has also taught at FLACSO and APEC.


The Museum of Modern Art will be closed from Friday, July 19 until August 15 as the process of installation of the 27th National Biennial of Visual Arts Santo Domingo 2013 takes place. The exhibit will open on Friday, August 16, at 7:00 pm at the MAM, which is located on Av Pedro Henríquez Ureña, Plaza de la Cultura Juan Pablo Duarte.
