The concept consists of using plastic containers, glass jars, bottle caps, glasses, bottles, pieces of wood, metalsand other used products to transmit characteristics related to the history, culture and folklore of the people of Puerto Plata, making the city center streets themselves an open-air museum. The first, “El tiempo de los Taimáscaros” [The Time of Taimáscaros], is a representation of one of the most colorful festivals of the city’s popular tradition of Carnival. This mural is being done on Padre Castellanos Street, on the corner with General Gregorio LuperónAvenue, also known as the malecón, or seaside walkway. Karina Abbott, coordinator of the Tourism Programs Based on Cultural Resources project, urged the community to welcome this initiative and conserve the murals, which are part of the preservation of the local identity. Ms. Abbott reiterated that all companies and businesses interested in donating material, can get in touch with the offices of the Tourism Cluster by email at info@discoverpuertoplata.com or by calling 809 320-1259. |
