CCP Presents Artist Genaro Reyes’ Sculptural Exhibition ”Flotaaltagracia de Miches a Baní” The Perelló Cultural Center, a private and nonprofit institution, will present in its facilities the sculptural exhibition “Flotaaltagracia de Miches a Baní,” a retrospective by laureate recycling sculptor Genaro Reyes, Cayuco. The opening ceremony and ribbon cutting of the exhibition will take place in the Main Exhibit Hall of the Perelló Cultural Center on Thursday, January 23rd, 2014 at 6:00 pm, in the presence of prominent local and national art scene personalities, during a night of celebration of the art by this sculptor, who is native of Miches, El Seibo province. This information was confirmed by Ms. Julia Castillo, Director of the Perelló Cultural Center, who opened this major exhibition underscoring that the people of Baní had never rejoiced before the stature of such a meritorious and renowned artist of the stature of Cayuco. “The Perelló Cultural Center offers the people of Baní the opportunity to enjoy sacred art, the plausibility of the unknown, and the beauty of Dominican popular religion, with winning pieces that have won important national recognition and which reinforce the perennial history of Cayuco’s Dominican sculptural art,” said the Director of the Perelló Cultural Center. The sculptural exhibition “Flotaaltagracia de Miches a Baní” is a retrospective by sculptor Genaro Reyes, who displays craftwork, furniture, art-artifact, altarpieces, ceramics and metal objects, smeltings, carvings, etc… It will display three major works which have won awards in national art competitions, one of them is “El Motoconcho,” assembled welding, Biennial National Award (1996), “La Cuabera,” a wooden altarpiece, National Biennial Acquisition Award (1998), and the work “Indocumentados (Undocumented),” metal boat, winner of the E. León Jiménes Award (2000) in the genre sculpture. Pieces from a private collection will also be displayed. On the retrospective, sculptor Genaro Reyes “Cayuco” says “each carved log has been thrown up by the sea, carried by the rivers, broken by the storms; they are here and there as a reverent offering. We are sure that the Perelló Cultural Center will be the perfect stage for the exhibition of this sacred art that brings us to celebrate our Lady of La Altagracia, patron saint of the Dominican people.” The exhibition is the result of an interagency reach out effort between the Perelló Cultural Center and the Miches Cultural Center, a community institution dedicated to the rescue of the cultural traditions of that population, and which the artist coordinates. As part of this interagency reach out and collaboration agreement, introductory woodcarving workshops will be held as well as intercultural artistic events, talks, discussions, and other activities.
