A delegation of Dominican writers living in the United States will participate with readings, lectures, and book presentations at the XVII International Book Fair of Santo Domingo 2014, to be held from April 24th to May 5th at the Plaza de la Cultura Juan Pablo Duarte.


The announcement was made by the Dominican Commissioner of Culture in the United States, Mr. Carlos Sánchez, who revealed that the winning entries that participated in the Literary Contest Letras de Ultramar, organized every year by the Commissioner, will be released during the event.


Additionally, the winning books will participate as Guests of Honor at the XVII International Book Fair Santo Domingo 2014, which has Panama as the Country Guest of Honor and will be dedicated to writer Domingo Moreno Jimenes, creator of the postumismo movement in the Dominican Republic.


The Commissioner´s events will begin on Friday, April 25th, at 11:00 am, at the Children’s Fair, with the release of the work El sapito azul y el misterio sonoro (The blue toad and the mysterious sound) y César Sánchez Beras, Letras de Ultramar Award, in the children’s literature genre.


The discussion about “Desidetara” by Erasmo Lara will take place at 3:00 pm in the Convivencia Pavilion. The conference “Julia de Burgos: Una mujer es un río de justicia y de sencilla verdad” (Julia de Burgos: A woman is a river of justice and simple truth”) by writer Rei Berroa will be held at 5:00 pm in the Dedé Mirabal Pavilion.


The presentation of the collection of poems Viandante en Nueva York (Passerby in New York), by Osiris Mosquea, will take place on the same day at 5:00 pm in the Universidades Hall of the National Library.


The Children’s Fair will host a reading of children’s books by César Sánchez Beras on Saturday, April 26th, at 11:00 am. The book El tragaluz del sótano (The basement’s skylight) by Kianny Antigua will be introduced at 3:00 pm at the Youth Space. Finally, the introduction of the book of tales Siempre odié los gatos (I always hated cats), by Elsa Batista, will be held at 4:00 pm in the Dedé Mirabal Hall.


César Sánchez Beras, Diógenes Abreu, and Rei Berroa will hold a poets’ reading at 7:00 pm in the “Raudy Torres” Cuisine-Book Pavillion. A reading of poetry and integration by María Palitachi, Kianny Antigua, Osiris Mosquea, Erasmo Lara, and Elizabeth Balaguer will take place at 9:00 pm in the Dominican Writers Pavilion.


The book Mía, Esteban y las nuevas palabras, (Mia, Esteban, and the new words) by Kianny Antigua will be presented on Sunday, April 27th at 11:00 am at the Children’s Fair. The magazine Trazos (Strokes) (third edition), by Osiris Mosquea and Félix García will be introduced at 3:00 pm in the Universidades Hall of the National Library.


The novel Amazonas del silencio (Silence Amazons) by Dinorah Coronado will be introduced on Monday, April 28th at 10:00 am in the Dominican Writers Pavilion.  The children’s workshop: Reading and dynamic with “El secreto de sonreir / the secret of smiling” by Elizabeth Balaguer will take place from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.


The discussion “Las fronteras invisibles del teatro latino”(The invisible borders of Latino theater), by Frank Disla, will take place on Wednesday, April 30th, at 5:00 pm at the Bar of the National Theatre.


The reading of poems, stories, and theater for adults, by Diógenes Abreu and Frank Disla, will be held on Thursday, May 1st, at 9:00 pm, in the Dominican Writers Pavilion.


The activity “Cómo leer en voz alta: materiales y sugerencias para hacer una lectura divertida” (Reading aloud: resources and suggestions for a fun read) will take place on Friday, May 2nd at 11:00 am in the Universidades Hall of the National Library. (This activity is for parents and teachers of elementary school), by Elizabeth Balaguer. The presentation of the book Ascenso y caída de Andresito Reyna (Rise and Fall of Andresito Reyna), by Frank Disla, Letras de Ultramar Award 2013, theater genre, will be held at 3:00 pm in the Dominican Writers Pavilion.


The books Ediciones del Comisionado-UASD: Los cuentos de Mount Hope (Tales of Mount Hope), a novel by Tomás Modesto Galán; Ya no estaban las palomas (The pigeons were no longer there), a storybook by Eduardo Lantigua; and, El día que los Jackson me cayeron encima (The day that the Jacksons fell on me), a storybook by Carmen Mata, will be introduced at 5:00 pm, in the Auditorium of the Museum of Natural History.


Danza Almagre (Almagre Dance), a collection of poems by Yvelisse Fanith, will be introduced at 5:00 pm, in the Dedé Mirabal Pavilion.


The Commissioner´s program will continue on Saturday, May 3rd at 8:00 pm, at the Museum of Modern Art, with the introduction of Sin haitianidad no hay dominicanidad: cartografía de una identidad que se bifurca (Withouth Haitian identity there is no Dominican identity: Mapping of an identity that branches off) by Diógenes Abréu, Letras de Ultramar Award 2013 (Essay genre).


The program will conclude on Sunday, May 4th with the conference: “Como convertirse en brujo” (How to become a sorcerer) by Jorge Piña.
