FILRD2014 announces a varied movie program at Cinema Pavilion The Ministry of Culture, through the Dominican Film Library, announced a program of film exhibitions, which will take place in the framework of the XVI edition of the International Book Fair of Santo Domingo 2014 (FILRD2014), based on literary works of different genres and nationalities. The films will be screened at the Del Libro a la Pantalla (From the Book to the Movies) Cinema Pavilion, located in the Plaza de la Cultura Juan Pablo Duarte, which is also the scenario of the FILRD2014. In addition, the public will be able to attend lectures, discussions and workshops on topics related to film screenplay, directing, producing and acting. The delegation of Panama, the fair’s Country Guest of Honor, will screen the film “Del Canal y otras historias panameñas” (About the Canal and other Panamanian stories), under the coordination of Panamanian filmmaker Luis Romero. Ms. Fiora Cruz, Director of the Dominican Film Library, unveiled the program that will take place during the FILRD2014, which will be held from April 24th to May 5th, and will be dedicated to poet Domingo Moreno Jimenes. Cruz said that a selection of 20 classic and modern films, based on literary works of different genres and nationalities, will be screened in a large hall with capacity for 450 people. Among the films to be screened are: “La Celestina”, “Del amor y Otros Demonios” (Of Love and Other Demons), “El Lazarillo de Tormes”, “El Secreto de Tus Ojos” (The Secret of Your Eyes), “La Ladrona de Libros” (The Book Thief), and “Las Infantiles Dr. Seuss y La Niñera Mágica” (Children’s Dr. Seuss and The Magic Nanny). The event has the support of the Directorate General of Film, which is chaired by Yvette Marichal, as well as of the Brazilian Cultural Center; the Alliance Française; the French Institute; the High Commissioner of the United Nations for Refugees (UNHCR), and the Embassy of Spain. In total, 100 films based on books titles will be showcased, including audiovisual elements. Competitions on short films relative to the value of books and reading will also take place. An additional competition on “Cinema and Literature of our Land”, which is aimed at rewarding Dominican short films based on national literary works, will also be included. Furthermore, a series of the films that received the most awards in 2013 will also be screened. Cruz said that Cuban filmmaker Rolando Díaz will teach the workshop titled “De la literatura al cine: Tropiezos y aciertos en las adaptaciones” (From literature to film: Setbacks and successes in adaptations). In turn, Dominican actor Giovanny Cruz will be in charge of the acting workshop “La construcción del personaje y la llamada de las emociones” (Building of a role and the summoning of the emotions). Other scheduled activities are roundtables under the title “Cinema and Latin American Identity”, by Dominican filmmakers Juan Basanta, Laura Amelia Guzmán and Panamanian filmmakers Pituka Ortega and Luis Romero. Keynote lectures on “Independent Cinema and the new Dominican Film”, by film and comparative literature professor Jerry Carlson; and on the topic “Audiovisual writing: Writing for TV”, by Chilean writer José Ignacio Valenzuela, are also included in the program. From April 24th to May 5th, lovers of films and reading, will participate in discussions on “The History of Cinema”, by Rienzi Pared; “Editing”, by Jorge Monchón, from the Adobe Community Professional; and, “The challenge of directing for the first time and new fundraising platforms”, by Dominican-Italian filmmaker Laila Petrone. |
