DREFF joins the III Edition of the International Autodidactic Photography Festival in Cuba

The Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) will be joining forces with the III Edition of the International Autodidactic Photography Festival in the province of Holguín, Cuba May 2-6, 2014. The event, originally designed as an international competition for amateur photographers, continues to be an inspirational platform for audio-visual arts projects promoting social justice, peace, and a genuine care and concern for the environment. This year’s theme is dedicated to the “Human Species’ Impact on the Environment”.

DREFF will serve to supplement the exciting and informative program of events by showing the general public 8 of its documentary and short films, free of charge over the course of four days. The program will include two film screenings daily from May 3-6, at the Ateneo Cinematográfico Hall at Maceo/Frexes and Aguilera, and will help raise awareness and promote best practices around the principle DREFF themes: ocean conservation; climate change; sustainable agriculture; and environmental pollution.

Screening Schedule is as follows:

May 3, 2014: Theme- Ocean Conservation
4:00 PM: Planet Ocean, Yann Arthus-Bertrand, 94 min. (documentary)
8:00 PM: What Would Darwin Think? Man v. Nature in the Galapagos, Jon Bowermaster, 48 min. (short film)

May 4: Theme- Climate Change
4:00 PM: The Polar Explorer, Mark Terry, 52 min. (documentary)
8:00 PM: Someplace with a Mountain, Steve Goodall, 52 min. (short film)

May 5: Theme- Sustainable Agriculture
4:00 PM: Voices of Transition, Nils Aguilar, 52 min. (documentary)
8:00 PM: Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom, Lucy Walker, 39 min. (short film)

May 6 : Theme – Environmental Pollution
4:00 PM: Trashed, Candida Brady, 98 min. (documentary)
8:00 PM: Garbage or Resource? A Dominican Republic Experience, Natasha Despotovic, 17 min. (short film)

DREFF’s final film, GFDD’s produced-short, Garbage or Resource? A Dominican Republic Experience, on May 6 at 8pm will be followed by a discussion led by Reydi Moreta, GFDD’s Social Networking and Promotion coordinator. It will include additional contributions from the Holguín organizers with the objective of strengthening partnerships in this area between Cuba and the Dominican Republic. GFDD hopes the partnership will lead to increased collaboration, and will help augment audiovisual material from the region within the DR Environmental Film Festival, which will celebrate its fourth edition September 10-14, 2014.

Cristiana Cruz Minier, coordinator of GFDD’s EcoHuertos program will also be participating in this forthcoming cultural exchange on behalf of the Foundations.
