Eurocine is announced from May 29th to June 11th
Santo Domingo, May 26, 2014

The Ministry of Culture, the Dominican Film Library and the European Union have announced the opening of “Eurocine 2014” on Thursday, May 29th. This edition, which will last until June 11th, has been dubbed “United in Diversity” and it will be held at the Dominican Film Library, located at the Plaza de la Cultura Juan Pablo Duarte.

During the press conference that took place in the auditorium of the Dominican Film Library, Fiora Cruz, Director of that entity, together with Jonathan Pitts, representative of the European Union, and Janna Ventura, press and communication officer of the foreign delegation, spoke enthusiastically about their expectations for the event, which promises great film screenings this year.

Admission to the screenings is completely free.  Screenings will take place Tuesdays through Sundays at 7:30 p.m., except on Saturdays when screenings for youth will be offered at 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm

Fiora Cruz considered as positive the fact that the European Union has chosen cinema as a means of establishing links between countries, and of achieving an enriching cultural exchange through the seventh art.
In her remarks, she said that it is very appropriate for this screening of European films to take place at a time when this art form is growing and developing fast in the country.

The festival includes films for all age groups. Those geared toward children include: Tad, the Lost Explorer, from Spain, for the youngest kids; Konrad Koch’s Dream, from Germany, for youth; dramatic comedies such as Baby Love, from France; and even dramas such as The Blitz, from the Neatherlands, and Bright Flight, from Italy.

The film that has been chosen to close the event is the Dominican film Cristo Rey, which was filmed with European funds and serves as a benchmark for the European Union to continue supporting the Dominican film industry.

Jonathan Pitts spoke about the quality of European cinema, and said that it is a different kind of filmmaking, with a very special flavor, that is permeating the Dominican market. According to him, this is a kind of cinema that is at times critic, sometimes hard, and sometimes even irreverent. There are films being offered for adults, children and teens.

He invited the Dominican public to take advantage of these screenings as they are being offered free of charge. This offer has been extended to the European expats living in Santo Domingo.
