Santo Domingo, June 3, 2014

The Aula Magna of UniNorte’s Graduate School was the stage where a large audience enjoyed the screening of the film “Ana’s struggle”, organized by the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) / Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) and the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in Paraguay, with the support of UniNorte.

The welcoming remarks on behalf of UniNorte were delivered by Professor Dr. Alain Saint-Saenz, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Director of International Relations of said university. Saint-Saenz thanked GFDD / FUNGLODE for allowing the university to be the stage where a film that is “full of social messages and reflection on the reality of our Latin American countries” would be screened, and welcomed the presence of representatives of the house of higher learning, as well as students and senior delegates of the diplomatic corps accredited in Paraguay.

Later, he gave the floor to Ms. Yamile Eusebio Paulino, Director of GFDD in New York, who welcomed the opportunity that Ambassador Marino Beriguete, of the Dominican Embassy in Paraguay, “gave us when he accepted the challenge of presenting this Dominican audiovisual, as part of the GFDD initiative Dominican Film Showcase”.
“GFDD seeks, through this initiative, to promote the Dominican film and to allow other countries to know the talent that the Dominican producers have.” In turn, she thanked the trust that Bladimir Abud, producer of the film, placed on GFDD to allow his work to be disseminated internationally, as a sign that the Dominican Republic has a high-level movie offer that addresses real issues that affect our region.
The film captivated the audience and generated feelings of empathy toward the figure of the lead actress, and received a strong round of applause at the end of the screening.

At the end of the film, Ambassador Beriguete thanked everyone for their overwhelming support, especially since this is the first time that a Dominican film is screened in Paraguay. He took the opportunity to inform the attendees of the existing interest of generating more initiatives to better understand the diversity of the Dominican culture, not only through films but also through other talents that the Dominican Republic has, such as music, sculpture and painting.

On the Dominican Film Showcase

The Dominican Film Showcase contributes to the dissemination of the best contemporary films produced in the Dominican Republic, by Dominican filmmakers, about Dominican topics. In its mission to promote the knowledge and appreciation for the Dominican culture, as well as to inspire Dominican filmmakers to reach out internationally, GFDD partners with institutions worldwide and creates opportunities for wide audiences to enjoy art, learn about the Dominican culture, and engage in conversations with filmmakers.

About the film

Ana is a poor single mother who earns her living selling flowers at Mercado Nuevo de Duarte. All she has is a 15 year old son, for whom she struggles to provide a good education, despite their scarce resources. Ironically, the day her child turns 16 years old, tragedy strikes, thereby unleashing “Ana’s Struggle”.
