Culture will Commemorate the 130th Anniversary of the Birth of Pedro Henríquez Ureña this Thursday

The program includes the symposium “Pedro Henríquez Ureña; extranjero en patrias” (Pedro Henriquez Ureña; a foreigner in homelands), by intellectuals Leila Guerriero, from Argentina, and Andrés L. Mateo, from the Dominican Republic.

On the occasion of the commemoration of the 130th anniversary of the birth of intellectual Pedro Henríquez Ureña, the Ministry of Culture will carry out ??a series of events on Thursday, June 26th, to pay tribute to the life and work of this great Dominican poet and humanist.

The events will start at 11:00 am with the laying of a wreath at the National Pantheon, the final resting place of the writer, who died on May 11th, 1946, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It will be headed by the Minister of Culture, José Antonio Rodríguez, who will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry, representatives from the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University and students from schools in the Colonial City.
The commemorative activities will feature prominent Argentinean journalist and writer,

Leila Guerriero, editor of the newspaper La Nación, collaborator of the newspapers El País, El Universal, and Excélsior, among others. She won the New Journalism Foundation Award in 2010.

In addition, Guerriero will participate, along with intellectual Andrés L. Mateo, in the symposium “Pedro Henríquez Ureña; a foreigner in homelands”, which will take place in the Aída Bonnelly de Díaz Hall, of the Eduardo Brito National Theater, at 7:00 pm. Writer Martha Rivera-Garrido will be the moderator. Both events are open to the public.

Pedro Henríquez Ureña was born in Santo Domingo on June 29th, 1884. The son of Francisco Henríquez y Carvajal, a prominent physician and educator who was President of the Republic in 1916, and Salomé Ureña, who was a dedicated educator and poet, and a pioneer in promoting the cultural participation of women.

He is the autor of the following works: “La utopía de América”, “La cultura y las letras coloniales en Santo Domingo”, “Corrientes Literarias en América Hispana”, “El Español en Santo Domingo”, “Plenitud de España”, among other.
