Dominican Republic Hosts Regional Meeting for the Latin American Countries on the Beijing and Marrakech Treaties

National and international speakers will participate. They will address topics relating to the implications of the aforementioned treaties.

The meeting will take place from July 8th to the 10th in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is aimed at officials and decision makers in the region on the topics to be discussed. Its purpose is to analyze the content and implications of the aforementioned treaties, regarding audiovisual performance interpretations.

Santo Domingo.-  The Dominican Republic will host the Regional Reunion for the Latin American Countries on the Beijing and Marrakech Treaties, sponsored by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the National Copyright Office.

The meeting will take place from July 8th to the 10th in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is aimed at officials and decision makers in the region on the topics to be discussed. Its purpose is to analyze the content and implications of the aforementioned treaties, regarding audiovisual performance interpretations.

The Regional Meeting for the Latin American Countries on the Beijing and Marrakech Treaties has the support of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and within the Dominican Republic, it has the support of the Ministry of Culture, the National Copyright Office, the National Intellectual Property Office, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Furthermore, this meeting seeks to analyze the Marrakech Treaty to facilitate access to published works for the blind, the visually impaired and other people who have difficulty accessing printed texts.

Among the speakers attending the event are: Mrs. Geidy Lung, from Geneva, Senior Advisor of the Copyright Division at the WIPO, who will speak about the topic “Introduction to the Beijing and Marrakech Treaties”. Also, Mr. Pablo Leucona, from the Latin-American Union for the Blind in Buenos Aires, will discuss the topic “Treaty of Marrakech: The Perspective of Blind and Disabled Persons.”

In addition, the topic Treaty of Beijing: “Perspective of the Producers and Other Interested Parties,” will be addressed by Mr. Frantoni Santana, former Director of the National Copyright Office; Federico de la Garza, from Mexico, Director of the Motion Picture Association of America; and Mr. Vingy Omar Bello, from the International Photomechanical Industry of Santo Domingo.

Other topics to be discussed at the meeting include: “New Exploitation Models for Audiovisual Producers in Latin America” and “Transfer of Copyright and Remuneration for Actors in Latin America.”

As part of the international event’s program, the delegates will attend a cocktail event on Tuesday, June 8th, dedicated to every one of the participating delegates. It will take place in the Green Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
