Users of the second Santo Domingo Metro line will have the opportunity of entering the world of technology and reding with the implementation of the new “Compumetro”, which was opened today by the Vice President of the Dominican Republic, Dr. Margarita Cedeño de Fernández. This initiative by Vice President Cedeño de Fernádez aims to encourage the love of reading and to bring technology closer to the users of the Metro, as well as to encourage its use in the course of their everyday tasks. This Compumetro, located in the Mauricio Báez station, is the fifth center that Cedeño de Fernández puts in operation since 2009. The other centers are located in the following Metro stations: Amín Abel, at Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD); Juan Bosch, in the Heroes Center; and, in the Juan Pablo Duarte station. In total, there are more than 100 different terminals available for use in the Compumetros, including the 15 computers that the new center has. This technological space was blessed by Reverend Father Carlos Patiño, who praised the work and projects that Vice President Cedeño de Fernández has implemented because of their contribution to youth education and constructive learning. The Compumetro offers access to the Internet, printers, newspapers, magazines and books free of charge. Visitors can take the printed material to their homes through an exchange system. The Compumetro is also equipped with audio books, reading rooms, playrooms, puzzles, chess games and various other board games. The program “Progresando con Solidaridad (Progressing with Solidarity)” (PROSOLI) is implementing the Compumetros project jointly with the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (INDOTEL) and the Office for the Reorganization of Transit (OPRET – Oficina para el Reordenamiento del Tránsito). The Compumetro was created so that youths and adults can conduct research and do their homework by using the Internet in an adequate space that is strategically located on their way to their schools or workplaces. The project contributes to reducing the digital divide of the country through the use of cutting edge technology. |
