Convention Center Being Studied for Santo Domingo

 

The Secretary of State for Tourism, business people in this sector, the District Town Council (ADN), the Chamber of Commerce and Production and the National Council for Competition (CNC) are studying the possible construction of the first Congressional Fairground, Convention and Exposition Center for the City of Santo Domingo.

 

To that end, a committee made up of representatives from government organizations like SECTUR, the CNC and the ADN was formed in conjunction with the private sector to include the Dominican Banco Popular, the Chamber of Commerce and Production of Santo Domingo, San Soucí Investments and the Association of Hotels of Santo Domingo (AHSD), according to a press release from the Department of Press and Communication of the Secretary of Tourism.

 

The proposal to undertake a pre-feasibility study was presented by the international company Messe Berlin of Germany which will carry out feasibility and environmental studies to gather precise information in order to determine the place and dimensions of the possible structure.

 

Financing

 

During the first working session of the Santo Domingo Convention Center Study Group, the breakdown of how much each entity would pay Messe Berlin the € 119 million Euros for the feasibility and market study was determined.

“This study is what will determine where to draw up the plan, what should will be the capacity of the convention center, what type of commerce, banks and restaurants should be considered in the final design and which countries should be involved in the center,” explained, among other things, Félix Jiménez, Secretary of State for Tourism, who presided over the meeting.

 

The study group estimated that, at the latest, by May of the coming year, a public international bid will be issued for the building of the Congressional Fairground, Convention and Exposition Center for the City of Santo Domingo

 

“Our goal is that by the year 2010 or at the latest 2011, this center will be up and running and that it will promote a revolution in the city of Santo Domingo as this project will create a true revolution of work and business in the capital city,” said Mr. Jiménez.
