Commissioner of Culture Sponsors Scholarships to Study Visual Arts in New York

In order to support young Dominicans who wish to pursue academic degrees in visual arts, the Dominican Commissioner of Culture in the United States, an agency of the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic, is offering scholarships to participate in the Summer Art Intensive Program at The Cooper Union School of Art in New York.

For this scholarship program, the Office of the Dominican Commissioner of Culture has received the support of prominent Dominican figures residing in New York and in the Dominican Republic.

“In our work program for 2015, we have included an ambitious project of training workshops on graphic arts, theater, photography, literature, etc.,” said Carlos Sánchez, the Dominican Commissioner of Culture. “These scholarships are part of this project and their purpose is to support young people who dream of pursuing careers in the visual arts,” he said.

The Summer Art Intensive program, to be held July 6 – 30, is a 4-week pre-college summer program that prepares students for applying to the best art undergraduate schools.

Participants in the next Summer Art Intensive will enjoy a concentration on studies that include animation, photography and graphic design, supported by intensive training in drawing and a class on contemporary art issues. The curriculum is designed to guide the preparation of a portfolio, and is taught by a specialized faculty of working artists. The program includes visits to major museums and art gallery districts, and engaging the students with the vast cultural resources of New York. Invited guest artists will offer a closer analysis of the professional practice. The Cooper Union Summer Art Intensive program will culminate with a student exhibition, a publication of art and written works in the form of a catalog, and a public screening of the animations, at a reception in Cooper Union’s Great Hall.

We offer pre-college education and experience that provides true support, creates high expectations and produces outstanding results for students wishing to be part of the excellence offered by The Cooper Union,” said Stephanie Hightower, Director of the Summer Art Intensive program.

The Cooper Union also offers four artistic residencies as part of the Summer Art Intensive program. The scholarships are awarded to outstanding visual artists who will spend the month of July on campus developing a new project in the painting and drawing courses. The residence provides spaces that are roomy, professional and with natural light, as well as an exhibition to honor the work of the resident artists.
