Designer Sissy Bermúdez said that the Association for the Sustainable Development of Sosúa (ADSS) is interested in promoting local crafts and the use of local materials, recycling, and environmental preservation. In his welcoming remarks, Andrés Pastoriza, ADSS President, said that “the development of Sosúa is a shared commitment,” and urged those present to work together to improve Sosúa.

After the opening of the fashion show “Areíto” as part of the craft bazaar and the fashion show “Sosúa Sol & Arena” (Sosúa: Sun & Sand) that took place last Saturday, Bermúdez explained that, in response to this interest, the ADSS created the first craft contest in the Dominican Republic, where the best works were selected to be exhibited at the event’s Crafts Village.

Bermúdez explained that, through the ADSS, artisans received advice from José De Ferrari, Director of the Crafts PIMES of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC), and Carlos Andújar, of Centro León, who were also the judges who selected the winners in the of Crafts for Tourist, Emerging Group and Open categories. He emphasized that, in addition, the craftsmen who exhibited their works at the bazaar received a financial education workshop sponsored by Banco ADEMI. He also underscored the support received from the ADSS for the integration of the artisans from Sosúa and Cabarete in this tourist destination, which is becoming ever more important.

In the “Sosúa: Sol & Arena” event, the winners received parchment scrolls for their participation and awards consisting of a certificate and cash. Frank Green and the Mañananaladié Group and the DJ Kelvin González provided the entertainment at the event’s “after party”. Francisco Sanchis was the master of ceremony. Sissy Bermúdez was responsible for the overall design of the event and Architect Orlando Rosario was responsible for the installation, together with Gregori Molina, interior decorator, and Amauris Santos, the teacher of the group of weavers.
