adorThird Recycling Competition in the La Romana – Bayahibe Destination With the objective of raising public awareness about the damage we do to the planet and to promote the culture of recycling, the Third Recycling Competition La Romana-Bayahibe took place recently. It was organized by the Hotels Association and the La Romana-Bayahibe Tourism Cluster, and included over RD$30,000.00 pesos in prizes, as reported by Cicom. Ana García, Executive Director of both institutions, said that the event is held every year to commemorate the World Environment Day, and “to emphasize the need to educate the public about recycling.” In presenting the awards, García thanked the participation and support of the teams made of hotel employees and other companies, as well as “the enthusiasm shown during the competition.” She described this third edition of the competition as successful. In it, dozens of participants used recyclable materials to create their pieces. The winners: Representatives of the Dreams La Romana Hotel with their piece “Jarrones” won first place in the Cardboard category, which carried a prize of RD$6,000.00. Likewise, the second and third place in this category went to Events and Catering with “Vestido de Novia Caribeño” and the Heart to Heart Foundation with “Tocando Fondo,” which carried cash prizes of RD$4,000.00 and RD$2,500.00 pesos, respectively. In the Plastics category of the Recycling Competition, the first place went to the employees of the Catalonia Gran Dominicus Hotel with their piece “Arte y Llantas,” which won RD$6,000.00 in prizes; while the contestants from the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Hotel won second place with “Iluplasty,” and the employees of the Be Live Canoa Collection Hotel won third place with “Relax,” worth RD$4,000.00 and RD$2,500.00 pesos, respectively. In the Overall category, the winners were the employees of the Catalonia Dominicus Hotel with their “Arte y Llantas” entry, which won RD$5,000.00 additional pesos.The jury was made of Engineer Joel Peña, representing the La Romana-Bayahibe Hotels Association; Daniel Flaquer, President of the La Romana-Bayahibe Tourism Cluster; Dr. Miosotis Sansur, Director of the Ministry of Tourism for the Yuma Area, Bayahibe and the Saona Island; Mónica Lorenzo, Regional Director of the Ministry of the Environment for La Romana; Brian Kraus, of Fundemary; and, Felipe Beltrán, representing the Ecoservices company. The Recycling Competition was held at Plaza Monte Carlo, Casino Dominicus, and was sponsored by Central Romana Corporation, LTD; Asociación Romana de Ahorros y Préstamos; the Marlin Azul and Toñito Grill restaurants, and Bepensa Dominicana, with its Coca-Cola brand.
