Leila Mejía recognized as Young Person of the Year by the Youth Parliament The Youth Parliament of the Dominican Republic has honored the broadcaster Leila Mejía as the Young Person of the Year for 2007 in recognition of her achievements in communication, her role as a university professor and the social activities she’s undertaking with the NGO National Youth Commitment, (JUNCO) that works with needy people.The presentation ceremony took place in the Manuel del Cabral Hall of the library at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) in the presence of the national press, legislators and international guests. Seventeen other young people were also honored, including Pamela Sued, host of the program “Con Freddy y punto” for Merits in Communication and news presenter, Libio Encarnación, for Civic Merits “I am happy to share the prize with young people whose skills are also being recognized here today, among them my broadcasting colleagues Pamela Sued whose talent, ability and grace I admire as well as Libio Encarnación, an example of progress and hard work,” said Leila. The broadcaster called on young people “not to wait for things to change or happen on their own but to make them happen with courage, attitude and enthusiasm.” Ruddy de los Santos, president of the Youth Parliament of the Democratic Republic, said that recognizing Leila as Young Person of the Year is also a way of “motivating young Dominicans to appreciate the value of studying, the discipline and ethics of hard work.” De los Santos explained that the goal of the organization under his direction is to promote democratic values while involving young people from around the country in the effort to create a true culture of consensus, such as the development of true opportunities for young people.
