Santiago Holds its First Carnival Parade of 2008 Carreras Avenue, in the center of town, was the site Sunday of the first Carnival parade to kick off “Santiago 2008.” As is the custom, the parade was characterized by wildly bright colors and a cheerful crowd to match the happy mood. Thousands of people gathered in the area of Monumento and Carreras Avenue to see the traditional groups, Los Lechones, or Devils, of Pepines and La Joya whose “rivalry” is always a source of entertainment to the spectators. The competition over their playfully mischievous ways and the beauty of their exquisite masks and costumes always attracts and keeps the crowds. This year, the butt of the Devils’ stinging satire was the baseball teams: the Cibaeña Eagles and the Licey Tigers, the two most popular teams in the country. At the moment, Santiago happens to be the host of the Caribbean Series which is going on right now, having attracted many outsiders to the city to enjoy their baseball and the fun of Carnival.
