The Dominican Republic Seeks Solutions to Rising Food Prices Worldwide The Dominican government arrived at a consensus on Thursday with production, commercial and retail sectors around the country that would essentially establish a reasonable pricing system of basic food necessities especially rice, chicken, eggs, milk and beans. “we will begin to see in the next few days the response to this cooperation and our consumers will be able to go to the supermarkets…” In the face of rising prices of basic products on the international market, President Leonel Fernández met at the National Palace with supermarket boards of directors and members of the food supply industry, wholesalers and gasoline distributors in an effort to set a reasonable pricing system for the local market, according to a press release from the President’s office In the first meeting with supermarket board members, President Fernández said the meeting ended in a spirit of cooperation among all the members of this sector. They all agreed to the plan that would guarantee their earning levels while offering their products to consumers at reasonable prices. The president said that from now on, with this understanding in place, “we will begin to see in the next few days the response to this cooperation and our consumers will be able to go to the supermarkets and see that prices will be more affordable to consumers whose well being and satisfaction will benefit the entire Dominican society.” President Fernández said that in comparison to what is happening in other countries around the world, in the Dominican Republic “we can say that we are shielded, protected in the face of this situation but we want to be prepared for any eventuality and put in place this type of consensus as a preventive measure.” The government has committed, in terms of the retailers, to pay the difference between the market price and the established price to be enjoyed by the consumer.
