Eight Jazz Concerts Planned for 2008 Theater House Jazz Festival

A total of eight concerts will bring together musicians from Latin America and the Caribbean for the 9th Edition of the Theater House Jazz Festival that will begin on Friday June 6 and continue throughout June and July with concerts every Thursday.

…parallel to the event the institution will be organizing different activities, all within the framework of the celebrating the cultural center’s 34th Anniversary.

Musicians from Cuba, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic will be opening the festival on Friday June 6 at 9:00 p.m. in the Cristóbal de Llerena Hall of the Theater House. And, to the delight of local jazz lovers, they will be projected on the big screen at the Theater Coffee Shop.

Freddy Ginebra, Director of Theater House, said that parallel to the event the institution will be organizing different activities, all within the framework of the celebrating the cultural center’s 34th Anniversary.

One of the events being held in parallel to the Jazz festival will include the presentation of jazz-related films and an open jazz space in the Theater House every Wednesday. The latter event is called Dominican Jazz in Casa de Teatro. The Jazz Festival is supported in part by BanReservas, the Dominican National Beer Company, Libre Newspaper, the Tourism Ministry, Codetel and Dewar’s 12.

The Program
Participants include: The Santo Domingo Jazz Big Band; Rafelito Mirabal and Sistema Temperado; Pengbian Sang and his Quartet of Six; the Cuban Trioof Ernán López Nussa.; the Ambiorix Francisco Group; Guy Frómeta-Ramón Vásquez-Yan Carlo Artime; the Rhythmic Quartet of Caracas and Sandy Gabriel and the Puerto Plata Jazz Ensemble.

The shows will cost RD$350.00 per person for those wishing to see the concerts live in the theater hall and RD$200.00 for viewers to watch the concerts on the big screen in the Theater Coffee Shop.

History
The Theater House Jazz Festival began in 2000 as a way to support the development of Dominican jazz groups and to offer public jazz enjoyment at a reasonable price.

The festival also seeks to encourage the growth of new jazz talent among the Dominican population as well as to give recognition to already existing musicians. The Theater House receives support from musicians and embassies from countries such as Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, France Great Britain, the United States and Venezuela, among others.
