“We are deeply proud of the success of the Broadway musical ‘In The Heights’, which showcases life for Dominicans and Latinos in Northern Manhattan,” said Victor Capellan, National President of the DANR. “We salute and congratulate the cast, crew, and producers of ‘In The Heights’ for winning its Tony Awards and we praise the musical for introducing to an international audience a neighborhood that hundreds of thousands of Dominican Americans proudly consider as home.”

“In the Heights” is a new Broadway musical about three days in the life of Washington Heights, which is a neighborhood considered the heart of the Dominican American community for its population dominance in the neighborhood. The music pulses with the hopes and dreams of three generations of Latinos as they struggle to forge an identity in a neighborhood on the brink of transition. “In The Heights” was conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also stars in the musical. The musical played its first Broadway performance at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on February 14, 2008 and celebrated its Opening Night on March 9, 2008.

The Tony Awards are presented by a joint venture of two organizations: The Broadway League, a national trade association for the commercial theatre industry; and the American Theatre Wing, a not-for-profit service organization for the theatre community.
