Digital Cities Program Gets Underway The Administrative Ministry of the Presidency put into effect the Digital Cities Program that will be carried out through a cooperation agreement signed by the Latin American Association of Research Centers and Telecommunication Companies (AHCIET), the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (INDOTEL) and the Presidential Office for Information and Communication Technology (OPTIC). He said the Digital Cities Program is a step in the direction of putting the Dominican Republic on the map in countries where people work without a rest to achieve their goals for the future, well-being and progress. Luis Manuel Bonetti, the Administrative Minister for the Presidency called the creation of the Digital Cities Program an important step to be carried out jointly with the country’s town halls. Mr. Bonetti stressed the effort being made by President Leonel Fernández to consolidate the advances and modernization in the country. He also pointed to the role of the digital programs implemented through INDOTEL and the OPTIC office, according to a press release from the Presidential Office of Information, Press and Publicity. He said the Digital Cities Program is a step in the direction of putting the Dominican Republic on the map in countries where people work without a rest to achieve their goals for the future, well-being and progress. José Rafael Vargas, President of INDOTEL and Domingo Tavárez, Engineer and Director General of OPTIC announced that, with this special gathering of the municipality, the cooperation agreement signed between AHCIET and these institutions will go into effect. Vargas and Tavárez stressed that the agreement will allow each municipality to become a digital city with Internet connectivity, access, information and available services for their cities. The technology cooperation agreement to develop the Digital Cities Program in the town halls around the Dominican Republic was signed between the directors of INDOTEL, Rafael Vargas and Domingo Tavárez, as well as the Secretary General of AHCIET, Francisco Alamillo. The signing ceremony took place at the Government house. INDOTEL and OPTIC will share responsibility for development of the project on a national level. They have also agreed with AHCIET to form a work commission that will coordinate the Digital Cities Program and collaborate in the development of the Electronic Municipal Governments in the local town halls around the country.
