Santo Domingo, August 3, 2019 – The Dominican Republic’s APEC University (Action for Education and Culture) and the Banco Popular Dominicano recently announced the celebration of the third annual “APEC 2019 Photojournalism Award.” The goal of the contest is to value and highlight the important work carried out by photojournalists in the country.
The world of photojournalism is unique and plays an important role in the mass media sector. Photojournalists are an integral part of journalism. One cannot exist without the other. APEC University, very much aware of the important role photojournalism and the key role they play in the country’s media outlets, encourages the presentation of images whereby they can tell stories through their lenses.
The details of the third annual contest were presented by the president of APEC’s Council of Directors, Justo Pedro Castellanos. Also, by Dr. José Mármol, Executive Vice President of Public Relations and Communications of the Banco Popular Dominicano and Elsa Turull de Alma, president of the APEC Cultural Program Commission. APEC’s Council President, Justo Pedro Castellanos, explained that the award – which this year is celebrating its third annual contest – highlighted that the goal of the award is to “prevail” and to value the importance of photojournalists.
The contest is open to photographers and photojournalists who are linked to national and international media outlets, print or digital, and who have resided in the country for five or more years.
At the same time, Executive Vice President of Public Relations and Communications, Dr. José Mármol, indicated that photojournalism is the “cornerstone” for the defense of objectivity in a period where the concept of fake news has grown.
Photojournalism is a key element that puts into perspective the events, not only from the news angle but including coverage in general. He also explained where these individuals are called; their photographs are an integral part of the story. Photographs are news, it is information.
All those interested must present photographs that have been published in national or international media outlets, between January 1 through December 31, 2018.
Members of the jury will be well-known photographers, as well as highly regarded critics. The awards will be announced in a special ceremony, which will also include a photo exhibit that will feature the photographs of the participants, at APEC University in October.
